Patch
This lovely lady is Patch. She only has one eye, so I named her Patch after eye-patch. I got Patch while I was interning at the zoo. She was originally a feeder mouse, but she was so sweet I just had to take her home with me!
Lately Patch had been scratching herself so much and so hard that her back had bloody sores! I took her the vet and it turns out she had lice! They gave me some canary lice/mite spray, which they said is okay for mice. Hopefully it works for her, we will know by August 8th! Wish us luck on that!
UPDATE: Patch still has lice!! (Boo!) But her hair is growing back, the sores on her back are healing ans she is not scratching herself bloody! Hopefully the vet will tell me on the 22nd if there's something else I can do to get rid of the lice!
UPDATE (10/24/10): Patch does not have lice any more!! Yay! :)
UPDATE: Patch passed away, March 2011. ~RIP~

My Sweet Pea
This beauty is my baby, Sweet Pea. I found her in November of 2004; she was running around our side yard at night! She was this small, pitiful animal that brought tears to my eyes. I could see every rib pushing through her skin, I could see the rivets of her spine, her legs were almost nonexistent...I'm sure she would have been dead the next morning if I hadn't found her. Her hair was extremely choppy, she was bald in some spots, and had little matted tuffs of hair in others. When I went outside to get her she tried to run away, ran around the side of my house, where she was trapped. She wanted to jump the wall, but didn't even attempt it, she knew she was too weak. I scooped her up, you'd think she would fight me after trying to escape, but I don't think she had it in her. She was the SWEETEST cat I had ever seen from the moment I picked her up.
I brought her into my house and quarantined her from our other animals (in my sisters room). The vet estimated she was at least 1 year old, and she weighed no more than a pound! With the help of my mom, I nursed her back to health.
As you can see in the picture she is now a much happier, healthier cat-and just as sweet as ever! She has taken to me more than anyone in the house, so she is not a family pet, she is all mine! My baby! She is now a healthy 5 pounds and never has to worry about being a day away from starving again!
UPDATE (3/29/13): My Sweet Pea had to have her right eye removed today, due to a large cornea ulcer. She only has her beautiful blue eye remaining. I pray she has a swift recovery!
UPDATE (4/16/13): Sweet Pea had her stitches removed. The corner of her eye didn't close up all the way so I'll be giving her some cream to help it heal. But she seems normal and is getting around fine with one eye!

Sam the Man
Because for now my sanctuary is just a dream (complete with A LOT of planning) I thought I could add some pictures and stories about the animals my family and I have rescued.
This big fellow is Sam aka Samuel aka Samson aka Sammy aka Samantha...think he's confused? Never! I am very proud to say that I came up with his name (Sam) and he is the first animal in the house (other than my Beta fish) that a name I came up with was picked! Yay me!
We got Sam a few years ago when he plowed through the children at an Elementary school during recess! He wasn't trying to be mean, he just wanted to play! He didn't understand that he was too big to be knocking kids around! Lucky for him, my mom works at that school and wouldn't let them call the pound! She brought him right home. He got along famously with my other two dogs right away, and while he annoyed our cats, he was not aggressive with them.
Sam has a few personality quirks (eating cat poop, for example), but he is still a very good boy! And even though he chewed up a few pairs of my favorite shoes, I'm glad he plowed his way into our lives!

Maggie May
This is my Maggie May. We adopted Maggie from a shelter after one of our treasured dogs, Mocha, passed away. Maggie looked a lot like Mocha, so we were drawn to her. Similar in appearance, but highly different in personality. Although no one will ever replace Mocha for me, Maggie has come just about as close as possible. She's an extremely loving, goofy dog, and I'm glad to have her in my life! I love you Maggie!!!
My Ma-ma-ma-Mocha
Still Loved, Still Missed
Miss Molly
This is Miss Molly. We got Molly after my mom found her on her school's playground. She brought her home and we took care of her while we looked for her home. We actually did find where she belonged, and her family came to get her. But when they arrived her dad and my mom started talking, and it turns out she was always getting out because the kids didn't take such good care of her. So her asked if we wanted to keep her, and my mom said yes! Molly's nickname here is 'brat cat' because she fights with everyone! She doesn't get along with our dogs, or our other cats, and she gets ornery with her human family too! But she is still part of the family and we love her.
UPDATE Molly has passed away

Goldie Roo Roo
This is dainty Goldie. We got Goldie when she was a puppy, from a woman who my mom worked with. Goldie is a pure bred golden retriever, but she wasn't show quality, so she wasn't wanted. I remember clearly that I wanted to name her Candy, but my mom didn't like that name! We've had her since I was 12 years old, she's 9 now. She's a very sweet dog, but also extremely excitable, she barks at EVERYTHING! Shhh Goldie! lol
UPDATE (12/14/12): We fear that our Goldie may have cancer. Will let you know when we get results back from the vet.
UPDATE (1/12/13): Goldie does not have cancer. She has a condition called Horner's Syndrome. There are various stages of this disease, and thankfully Goldie has the best one you can have, it is not life threatening.
UPDATE (1/25/13): Goldie passed away last night at 10:00 pm. She was surrounded by people who loved her, and got some yummy treats beforehand. I had her for half my life, and she will be deeply missed.

Our Dark Knight
This is Duncan! Our 3rd cat. He is a goofy fellow! He has the occasional mood swings; sometimes he's a 'normal' sweet cat and keeps to himself. But other times he needs to get as much love and attention as he can! He rubs himself around our legs, he jumps in our laps and knocks his head against us, he meows and follows us around...he's a sweet heart when he wants to be!
When we took care of litters of kittens from feral cats that were brought to us Duncan would help us take care of them. He would help clean them and potty them like a momma cat. That's our boy!
*This is a picture of Duncan at the vets office, so he is not too happy at the moment! :) *

Mister Chaucer
This is our bird Chaucer. My sister got him from my parents. He was a PetSmart bird. He has not taken to me very much. He would always bite me if I ever tried to touch him, and once he even jumped on me, beat me with his wings and bit at my hands (which were covering my face). BUT, despite all that violence (on his part) I have tried to give him more attention so he doesn't get lonely. He's gotten a little more tolerable of me, which is good news for my fingers!
UPDATE: We've found Chaucer a new home so that he can get more attention. With everyone working and/or in school these days, he was feeling a little neglected! But I'm sure he's getting lots of love and attention now.

Phillip
Here is Phillip, the newest member of our family! We weren't going to get any more animals, but once you hear Phillip's story you'll know why we couldn't turn him away.
My mom found Phillip, during a heat wave here, left on the side of the road, locked inside a small crate with no water, food, or bedding. He was covered in his own pee, and he was terrified. Left on his crate was a small hand written note, "my name Phillip, please take me home." And that's just what she did.
We did try to find him a home, but he needed SO much work done nobody that wanted him could pay for all his care. He needed his duclaw's removed, he had a skin condition on his ears, he needed to be neutered and his teeth were in great need of a cleaning. So after paying for all his work, it was only logical to my parents that we keep him.
He was scared for a long time, and while he still has some issues to work through (he's scared of kisses, and human heads), you can see from his picture he's a much happier, healthier boy!
UPDATE: Phillip is doing very very well and is no longer scared of human heads and kisses! I still have to hold him to kiss him, but he doesn't scream or run away. He also likes to play by rearing up and pawing at my face.

Tinkerbell
This little girl is the newest addition to our family. I started fostering Tinkerbell in a "buddy program" for the Home 'Fur' Good animal rescue in February 2012. Tinkerbell was having a hard time being adopted because she had behavioral issues; she would snap at strangers if they tried to touch her, and she would bark at them. So I began working with her to try and fix this problem. I brought her to my home where she was exposed to a lot of people she didn't know, and I also took her to a few training classes (offered to the rescue for free).
The very first time I met Tinkerbell I wasn't even able to touch her, but through training and time she learned to trust me. But at first I was the only one in my family she would let touch her. She slowly got used to the other people in the house, but even that took months! And a problem we were noticing was, Tinkerbell had gotten GREAT with me, and was getting better with everyone in my family...but she still wouldn't let any potential adopters touch her! It seemed that Tinkerbell thought she had already found her family and she wasn't interested in anybody else!
Well, after 7 months of fostering Tinkerbell, I made it official and adopted her myself!

Leela
I'm sorry I didn't add Leela before, but I thought I'd have plenty of time to get around to it. Turns out, I was wrong.
We adopted Leela about 6 months ago from my new place of employment. She looked so scared in her cage that we couldn't say no to bringing her home.
We thought she was about 4 years old, but after taking her to the vet it turns out she was closer to 8 years. Still young for a small dog, but not as young as we'd thought.
I'm extremely sad to report that last night (2/12/14) at 8:30 pm my little Leela passed away. She had been fine just minutes before and never showed any signs of illness, we think she may have had a heart attack. I found her lying unresponsive on the ground. We tried CPR but it was too late.
We didn't get much time with Leela, but her loss is still extremely hard. We expected to have many more years with her.
